She's Our Joy!
It was probably not a surprise when volunteers with The Arc of Hanover received the Email from Volunteer Coordinator Zach Kenney sharing that Joy Shannon was nominated for Hanover County’s 2026 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards. We congratulate Joy in her nomination for the Spirit of Purpose Award, which recognizes adults between 31 and 59 for their steadfast dedication through meaningful acts of volunteer service. Joy's nomination read as follows:
"Joy Shannon has volunteered with The Arc of Hanover for more than two years, sharing her time, talents and heart to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She teaches art classes that foster creativity, confidence and connection and mentors new volunteers, helping them feel prepared and welcomed.
Joy also contributes countless hours in the Thrift Store staging merchandise, organizing inventory, and assisting in the warehouse, which ensures The Arc's financial sustainability and supports programs that build skills for employment.
Joy's programs help participants develop independence, practical skills and self-assurance. Through her teaching and guidance, individuals grow in confidence and pursue opportunities for personal and professional development. Her leadership strengthens the organization by creating systems, mentorship structures and volunteer engagement for long-term success.
Joy's commitment, compassion and reliability have left a lasting mark. Kim Thompson, the Store Manager at The Arc says, 'Through her dedication, generosity and willingness to always lend a helping hand, Joy truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism. She consistently supports The Arc of Hanover with enthusiasm and reliability, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.' Stacey Murrell, Executive Director, adds, 'Every aspect of The Arc of Hanover that Joy touches is left better because of her time, care and attention.'"
Thank you, Joy, and congratulations!

We have amazing opportunities
So many roles and so many great people! It's no wonder our volunteers say one of the best parts of volunteering is the community. Come in when we're open to get the tour, complete our online Volunteer Application Form, and you'll soon be ready to sign up for the Thrift Store opportunity that fits best for you. We'd love to have you!
-
Intake - Saturday volunteers at the Warehouse help people donating items by unloading vehicles and moving items into the sorting area.
-
Sorting - We need help to sort the donations we receive before they are priced. (Monday-Saturday hours available)
-
Pricing - Do you like to research items on the computer? We need volunteers to help assign prices to unusual or vintage items. (Monday-Saturday hours available)
-
Staging - Dress our for-sale items in the most pleasing, logical or seasonal arrangements. Bring your creativity! (Monday-Saturday hours available)
-
Cleaning - Such a big space with so much traffic and so much to keep looking good. We need dusters, trash collectors, floor sweepers and bathroom polishers. It's one of the top customer service needs. (Monday-Saturday hours available)
-
Working the Register - One of our specialty roles, but we will train you! Help us keep our check-out lines moving smoothly and customers happy. (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday only)
-
Relationship opportunities with our volunteers who have intellectual or developmental disabilities - We love our self-advocate volunteers. Sometimes, a community volunteer coming alongside is what makes it possible for an individual to find purpose and to have a great time doing something that is valued. We offer training here, too. Please consider: It's our MISSION. (Monday-Saturday hours available)
