Your Donations Beyond the Thrift Store
One of the hallmarks for which The Arc of Hanover Thrift Store would like to be known is its thoughtfulness and care of donated items. We sell what we sell at well-researched prices.

What we don't sell in the Store, we offer up to the community through the Warehouse Sale or our FREE Sales. But then what?
The thoughtfulness continues.

"We want people who donate items with us to know that we are truly caretakers of what they give to us," says Julie Flagler, who co-chairs the Thrift Store Committee with Joy Shannon. "Not everything can be sold, but that doesn't mean an item does not have a purpose or benefit to us and our mission."
Metal Recycling
Given their drop-off condition, some donated items head directly to our recycling area. Non-functioning electrical items, like a string of non-working Christmas lights, are stripped of their metal casings and other parts and wiring, so the metal can be locally recycled for scrap payment to us.
Damaged metal home goods -- like pans with scratched non-stick surfaces -- or rusted items can also be recycled for a bit of profit. Finer metals, like silver, brass or pewter, are sold to a local refiner.
Traditional Recycling
We also recycle the items you probably recycle at home: Cardboard, paper and cans. Cans are placed with our other metal recycling; paper in standard collection bins that we take to a Hanover County facility; and, cardboard is flattened in preparation for transport to a county facility.
Eyeglasses
We take eyeglasses to a local Lions Club collection site. The Lions have collected and refurbished eyewear for the purpose of giving back to those in need for more than 100 years.
Clothing
What we cannot sell is set aside for pick up by Planet Aid, another non-profit dedicated to textile reuse and funding programs for people in need in other nations.

Building Materials
We shared our building materials with the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store for their use in projects or supporting their resale efforts.
Unusable Blankets and Towels
Donated to local animal shelters.
Furniture Donations to CARITAS
CARITAS is an organization that offers "individuals struggling with addiction, housing insecurity, and/or unemployment an opportunity to heal and rebuild." We partner with CARITAS in providing furniture donations.
