The Raffle that Ruffled Expectations

The day had a beautiful start: 80 golfers registered to take on the course at the Hanover Golf Club for The Arc of Hanover's 2026 Golf Tournament. It was, in the words of coordinator Steve Harrison, "a magnificent event."
Golfers enjoyed the Captain's Choice tournament, lunch and many prizes and gifts. Several self-advocates played and the volunteers who served -- many in hot, sunny spots -- were fantastic. The Arc of Hanover is receiving some $6,900 from the event. Our partners at the Kiwanis Club of Ashland, who helped to recruit players and teams and provided other support, received about $1,700.
But something happened, post-course time, that no one expected. As he was awarding the prizes for the various contests, Steve came to the 50:50 Raffle -- it's a cash raffle in which a ticket holder is eligible to win half the proceeds (or one of the many prizes donated by our sponsors). The total price for the raffle was half of $790 -- or $395 -- to go to the winning ticket holder.
Jeremy Austin, a player from Herman W. Allen Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, the Gold Sponsor for our tournament, held the winning raffle ticket. In stepping forward to receive the prize from Steve, he immediately returned it to him, saying he was giving it back to The Arc of Hanover for use in its mission!

The tournament may be over, but the gifts from the day -- like Jeremy Austin's and those of our many player registrants, sponsors, donators and volunteers -- will carry through as we continue "putting our best forward" alongside individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
We are grateful for your financial contributions to The Arc of Hanover in support of programming and operations which serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Hanover County.
