At the heart of The Arc of Hanover, keeping our doors open and our mission thriving, is a force of nature named Misty Smith. Navigating the world with a cane due to limited use of one side of her body, Misty may stand a little shorter than most, but her impact is immeasurable. Volunteering diligently 25 to 30 hours a week as our cashier at The Arc of Hanover Thrift Store, Misty is far more than just the friendly face at the register – she's an indispensable part of our family.

Frankly, we'd struggle to maintain our operating hours without Misty's dedication. Her unwavering commitment is a testament to her incredible strength, especially considering the significant loss she has faced in her own family. Yet, through it all, Misty radiates a quiet resilience that inspires everyone around her.

For now, Hanover is home for Misty, but exciting changes are on the horizon. This summer, she'll be moving back to Florida, a significant transition coinciding with her son, Marcus, celebrating a major milestone: his graduation. This move marks a new chapter for Misty and her family, filled with the promise of new beginnings.

But the Thrift Store is more than just a volunteer role for Misty: It's a place where she has found a deep sense of belonging. Here, surrounded by colleagues and the individuals we support, she has built meaningful personal relationships, forging a new kind of family. Perhaps most importantly, at The Arc of Hanover, Misty feels seen not for her physical limitations, but for the capable and valued individual she is. In her own words, it's a place where she feels "like a regular person," a sentiment that speaks volumes about the inclusive and accepting environment we strive to create.

Misty's story is a powerful reminder that strength comes in many forms, and that community can be a profound source of healing and belonging. As Misty prepares for her move to Florida and celebrates Marcus's graduation, we want to express our deepest gratitude for her unwavering dedication to The Arc of Hanover. She's a true treasure, and while we'll miss her dearly, we celebrate this exciting next step in her journey with her. Next time you're at the Thrift Store, remember the incredible woman who has helped keep our lights on and our hearts full.
